LGA Architectural Partners’ Janna Levitt and MABELLEarts’ Leah Houston will present the culmination of the organization’s 15 years of cultural work on Mabelle Avenue initiated by MABELLEarts (a community development organization led by artists) and culminating in the design of a new club house and regenerated park in the centre of the neighbourhood. Mabelle Avenue is a low-income, high-density tower community in Toronto’s inner suburbs. By working overtime with thousands of residents and over 100 community partners, MABELLEarts has made a substantial impact. This work influenced LGA’s design for the new building and park and provided clues to the appropriate climate and carbon strategies for the project. The strategy will be presented through three scales : the neighbourhood, the site and the building. At all scales, the same issues of creating a more livable, equitable city through pop ups, adaptive re-use, mobile programming, job creation and co-cultural creation are manifested.
